So much more than a babywearing coat

Do you love babywearing and the closeness it brings – that wonderful feeling of having your baby snuggled up while you're free to move? Then you’ll love the comfort and ease a babywearing coat or jacket adds to your everyday. No more wondering how to dress your little one before heading out – just pop them in the carrier as they are, and your jacket does the rest, keeping you both warm and protected. At mamalila, we care about making your time outdoors feel just right. That’s why our babywearing coats jackets are carefully designed to support you, your baby and your needs – in every season, in any weather.

The mamalila Principle

4-in-1: it's not "just" a babywearing coat

All our coats jackets are designed around the smart 4-in-1 principle – giving you a maternity coat, a babywearing coat (for front and back carry), and a regular coat in one stylish and practical piece. Whether you're pregnant, babywearing, or out on your own, your mamalila adapts to your everyday adventures.

With just a few zips, your coat transforms: the pregnancy option makes room for your growing bump, whether it's an extra pregnangcy insert or zips on the side, while the baby insert lets you carry your baby close – whether on your front or your back. And when you’re not carrying? Simply remove the inserts and wear your mamalila as a normal coat.

Your baby is always well protected under a mamalila babywearing coat – from wind, cold, rain or whatever the weather looks like. Each insert is thoughtfully designed for weather protection and cosy comfort, with details that vary slightly depending on the model. But what stays the same: your baby is safe, snug, and close to you.

Sustainable by conviction

At mamalila, we've been creating babywearing jackets for 20 years – and from the very beginning, one thing was clear: our jackets must be made under fair conditions and as sustainably as possible. After all, your baby is carried close to your body and in direct contact with the jacket – so using materials free from harmful substances is our top priority.

But for us, sustainability goes beyond safety. We want our babywearing jackets not only to protect your child today, but also the world they’ll grow up in tomorrow. That’s why we’re committed to fair working conditions and the responsible use of resources in every step of our production.

The original babywearing coat - since 2005

Our babywearing coats are based on more than 20 years of experience, plenty of expertise – and the strong desire to truly support parents in everyday babywearing.

Vicki, the founder of mamalila, developed the first babywearing coat when she became a mother herself: she wanted to carry her baby and be well and weatherproof dressed – without compromise.

Today, not only Vicki's personal experience flows into every coat, but also the combined know-how of our small, dedicated team in a small German town near Nuremberg – 100% female power with textile expertise, love for detail and a deep connection to real family life.

A mamalila solution for every season

To find the perfect babywearing coat or jacket for you and your little one, we recommend first thinking about the season you'll start babywearing. From there, it’s easier to decide what kind of protection and features you'd like your jacket to offer.

Babywearing in fall

A babywearing coat or jacket is the best way to continue carrying your baby outside when the weather gets unpleasant. Under your jacket, your little one gets protection from wind, rain and cold, while you don't have to stress about getting them dressed when you go out. Babywearing jackets for Fall have a light padding and can usually be worn into winter with an extra thick layer underneath.

Babywearing in winter

A babywearing coat or jacket is an absolute must for every babywearing parent in winter: since your baby doesn't move by itself and can easily get cold when carried outside, you should definitely share a warm and cosy jacket when it gets frosty. Then nothing stands in the way of a relaxed winter walk. The best thing about it: by sharing one jacket, you keep each other warm!

Why babywearing outside is the best

With your mamalila babywearing coat or jacket, you carry your baby snuggled up close to you — giving them that all-important feeling of love and security while keeping your hands free. It makes it so much easier to get out and enjoy life with your baby — active, relaxed, and on the move. In every season. In any weather. Even on your next outdoor adventure.

All you really need is your babywearing coat — and you're ready to go! Because when you're babywearing, you're so much more mobile and flexible. When crowds make it hard to get through with a stroller, or rough terrain blocks the way, your mamalila jacket lets you just keep going — stress-free. Forest paths, stairs, busy streets? No problem when your baby is in a carrier. Even a casual “walk and talk” with a friend is easy with your little one close. As your child gets older, it’s worth trying back carrying. It’s easier on your spine and gives your little explorer a great view over your shoulder — which they’ll love! Your mamalila babywearing jacket or any mamalila babywearing coat works just as well for that, too.

And by the way: fresh air is good for both you and your baby. So grab your jacket and step into your next newborn adventure

Questions about your babywearing coat?

A babywearing coat solves a simple but important issue:
When you carry your baby in a sling or carrier, they sit in front of your belly – just like during pregnancy – which means your regular coat no longer closes over both of you. A babywearing coat gives you a smart, practical solution.

Here’s why it’s worth it:

  • Keeps your baby warm and close: You carry your baby under your coat, keeping them protected from the cold and letting you feel really easily if they’re too hot or too cold.

  • Safer than bulky snowsuits: Thick clothing compresses in a carrier and loses insulation. A babywearing coat keeps your baby warm without extra layers – and babies who are too cold don’t cry, they often just fall asleep.

  • Protection from rain and wind: Rain falls from above and runs straight into an open coat. Only a proper babywearing coat can keep both of you dry. Umbrellas often leave baby’s back exposed.

  • No need to wake a sleeping baby: Just take off your coat at home – your baby doesn’t need to be undressed.

  • Perfect for in and out of shops: When moving between cold and warm spaces, you can open the coat so your baby doesn’t overheat. That’s not possible with a bundled-up baby.

  • Better fit than oversized coats: A babywearing coat zips around your baby up to their neck, and fits you properly too – for maximum comfort and protection.

Your mamalila babywearing coat is already there for you before your baby is born. With the included maternity option, you can turn any mamalila babywearing coat into a fully functional maternity coat.

As soon as your baby arrives, you simply zip in the babywearing insert – and you're ready to head out with your little one. It’s a good idea to ask your midwife or a babywearing consultant to show you how to position your baby correctly, so you can start wearing right from the beginning.

The insert on your mamalila coat works both in front and on your back, so you can switch to back carrying later on. That’s often more comfortable once your child gets a little bigger and heavier — and when they’ve grown so tall you can’t see over their head anymore. Give it a try — back carrying is easier than you think, super comfortable, and a lot of fun!

From experience, your child will fit under your mamalila coat up to around 18 months to 2 years.

In the very early weeks, babies are still small and often disappear inside the coat — in that case, just leave the top part open so they can see out. Once your baby has good head control, you can close the coat up fully over your chest and neck to keep both of you warm and protected.

That depends a little on you and your baby — some people tend to get chilly easily, while others warm up quickly. In general, it’s important to know that you and your baby share body heat under the coat, which means you're both naturally warmer together than you would be on your own. That’s why a babywearing coat doesn’t need to be as thick as your regular winter coat.

It also depends on where you live. Do you often have very cold winters, or is the climate more mild in your area?

You can also decide based on your personal style:

  • If you like to layer, you might go for a lighter coat and simply wear a warm sweater underneath in colder weather.

  • If you prefer to be snuggly and ready for winter, one of our fully insulated winter coats might be the right choice for you.

Choose your usual size. Your mamalila babywearing coat should fit you well without your baby, because after all, it's also designed to be worn as a regular coat — and we’re pretty sure you’ll enjoy wearing it on its own, too.

The baby insert provides all the extra space your little one needs when you're babywearing, so there's no need to size up.

That really depends on your personal situation:

  • If you're pregnant, it’s already worth it — because you can use your babywearing coat as a maternity coat right away.

  • If your baby is already here, it depends on how often (and how much) you like to carry them. Do you enjoy getting out for walks together? Want an easy, cozy way to spend more time outside with your baby? Then we definitely recommend a babywearing coat — it makes everyday life simpler, more comfortable, and a lot more flexible.

  • If you only babywear occasionally, or mostly indoors, a babywearing cover might be enough. A cover keeps your baby warm while you wear your regular coat open — and since it’s not size-specific, other caregivers like dad or grandma can use it too.
